Caroline Copsey
Couldn't walk up a hill to pulling a 100kg deadlift
Caroline Copsey transformation

Life is busy as I juggle school runs, work, dog walks etc. My health had long been at the bottom of the to-do list. I realised I couldn't walk up the hill to my house without getting out of breath. I needed to make the commitment to myself, and I knew I needed structure and accountability otherwise I wouldn't go. I was seriously nervous.

Initially I was just trying to survive the workouts! With consistency my fitness improved and now I'm pushing for new skills and seeing real gains. My body feels strong for the first time. I have not only improved my cardio fitness but I have made huge strength gains. Last week I got my first 100kg deadlift. As a woman in my mid 40s lifting is crucial to my bone health — and it's the bit I enjoy the most.

I feel better positioned to handle the craziness of life as a working mum. Being able to commit to myself over a long period has shown me that I can carve out time for myself alongside all my other commitments. The community that CrossFit Bodmin has given me has really helped me feel connected to my local area — as someone who works from home my gym buddies are often the only people I see outside my family. And they are all truly excellent people.

Cynthia Nunes
Never done sports to quitting smoking and discovering what her body can do
Cynthia Nunes transformation

I heard of CrossFit through someone at work and had no idea what it was about but my colleague described it with such enthusiasm that it sounded like it had to be fun. So I decided to try a session!

When I started I couldn't even warm up without getting out of breath. I used to be a smoker without any background of fitness or sports. Fast forward being at CrossFit Bodmin — I found a community that not only is inclusive but is encouraging and celebrates every win you have!

I have grown to understand what my body can do and appreciate it so much for what it can achieve rather than what it looks like — plus you eat to fuel your body as opposed to worrying about a diet which is such a win! I went from someone never having done sports and being under confident to someone who dabbled in climbing, learnt swimming, running! I enjoy weights, the high intensity classes and I've quit smoking! I've also realised that being there for the people you love isn't just about caring for them or providing security — it's about looking after your own health so you can stay physically present for as long as possible.

From aimless and unfit to dancing at festivals till sundown
Ian Watkis transformation

Anyone who's been to a music festival will tell you it's a lot — marching all your camping gear in, setting up, spending all day on your feet in all weathers and most importantly, jumping up and down for hours on end to amazing uplifting music! So trying to do this whilst becoming increasingly overweight and unfit was taking a lot of the fun out of it for sure.

On talking to Jack though he completely changed my preconceptions about CrossFit — taking away my worries about being looked down upon by a gang of super fit people to instead describing it as something that, although challenging, would crucially be doable for me, with results sure to follow for anyone willing to get stuck in. And he wasn't wrong.

Every class is different, giving me the opportunity to try something new whilst really allowing me to get into activities which before joining, I would never have had the confidence to even try. And all this in actually a genuinely lovely environment full of super supportive people from day one, something that remains really important to me to this day. So I went from feeling quite aimless and unfit to having a good fitness structure, immense support, and plenty of energy to now dance around wearing wellies in a field till well after sundown.

Heaviest he'd ever been to running half marathons

I made the decision to join CrossFit Bodmin at a time when lots of changes were happening in my life (new job, new home, new location) and thought I should go for the most important change which was to slim down and get fit. Several years of challenging emotional hits had put the weight on my body and consequently my ability to exercise dwindled. I was the heaviest I'd ever become. Running was my go to exercise for several years but I knew my knees would not be happy to restart that.

I'd seen success of friends doing CrossFit and how it wasn't just one physical attribute that changed it was several. So CrossFit seemed perfect for me. How has my fitness changed? It feels like it happens stealthily. From literally vomiting after my first induction training, I'm now back running half marathon distances regularly. I don't feel breathless walking up hills. I can lift heavy pots and compost when I'm gardening much more easily. For me, it hasn't been about hitting a deadlift personal best or getting a specific task accomplished. It's about transforming all the things I can now do better and with ease in every day life.

What's the best part for me about CrossFit Bodmin? My work schedule is chaotic and no matter which class I show up to, I know I'll have friends to talk to and encourage me. Every session has mixed abilities and we all get to inspire each other to more and more. We also see each other's progress and are able to share if as sometimes we can't see the change ourselves. You also get coached by different experts and that turns into identifying ways to improve every day. My one wish. I could get here more often.
