What to Expect on Your First Day
I get it. Walking into a CrossFit gym for the first time is nerve-wracking. You have probably seen videos of elite athletes doing impossible things and thought there is no way that is for you. Let me talk you through exactly what happens when you turn up, so there are no surprises.
Getting There
We are at Unit 2, Callywith Court on Launceston Road in Bodmin. There is free parking right outside. When you arrive, just come through the main door. You do not need to buzz in or find a side entrance. Someone will be there to meet you. If you are early, that is fine. If you are bang on time, also fine. Just do not stress about it.
The Chat
Before you touch a barbell or do anything physical, we will have a proper chat. Your coach wants to know about you: any injuries, your training history (even if it is zero), what you are hoping to get out of it. This is not a sales pitch. It is so we can make the session work for you. Be honest. If you have not exercised in ten years, just say so. Nobody is judging you.
The Warm-Up
Every session starts with a warm-up. It is not just jogging on the spot. We will take you through movements that prepare your body for what is coming. This is where the coach starts teaching you how things work: how to hold the bar, how to squat properly, how to brace your core. It is relaxed and there is plenty of time to ask questions.
The Workout
The workout itself will be scaled to you. I cannot stress this enough. While the person next to you might be lifting 80kg, you might be using a PVC pipe or a light barbell. That is completely normal. Everyone in the room started exactly where you are. Your coach will tell you what weight to use, which version of each movement to do, and how many reps to aim for. You are not expected to know any of this. That is what we are here for.
What to Bring
Keep it simple. Trainers you can move in (running shoes are fine to start), comfortable gym clothes, and a water bottle. That is it. We have all the equipment. You do not need lifting shoes, knee sleeves, or any specialist gear. If you stick around and catch the bug, you can sort all that later.
After the Session
You will probably be a bit knackered. That is normal. You will also probably feel brilliant. Most people walk out and say something like "that was actually really fun" or "I did not think I could do that." We will chat about how it went, answer any questions, and if you want to come back, we will sort out the next steps. No pressure, no hard sell.
The hardest part is walking through the door. Everything after that, we handle. Every single member we have felt exactly the way you do right now before their first session. And they all came back.
